Installation of a project begins with proper site prep, focusing primarily on eliminating existing weeds and correcting any drainage issues prior to planting.

Plant Sourcing and Layout

Maintenance

For installations by Urban Prairie Landscape maintenance service for the first couple seasons is highly encouraged to ensure successful establishment of your project. Select other clients will be considered for maintenance on a case by case basis.

Design & Installation Process

All projects begin with an initial site visit to determine the scope of the project, if your vision aligns with your budget and who will care for the new garden moving forward. We strive to work with existing topography, soil and vegetation when possible. If the project is a good fit for the services we offer, a site analysis including measurements and pictures will be taken to begin the design process.

Initial Consultation and Site Visit

The design process will depend on the project and the clients’ preference for detail. Some planting projects will need a simple sketch to determine plant placement, while some may begin with a conceptual plan that progresses to a final detail planting design. If needed, final plans can include a plant and material list and a cost estimate for installation. Phases for larger projects can also be considered at this stage

Planting Design

Site prep of a residential front yard conversion includes removing all current vegetation to prepare the bed for a new prairie planting.

Preparing the site is the first step of installation, including minimal grading, clearing, and constructing any built features. Extra attention is given to any planting areas to ensure weeds are eliminated before installation. This process may take extra time but is important in setting up the long term success of the landscape and lowering maintenance needs in the future. Options for treatment of weeds can be discussed at the initial consultation.

Site Preperation

Planting layout will vary depending on the detail of the planting design. Some projects can be laid out on site without a design, especially a natural prairie garden, while others will follow a detailed planting plan. Adjustments are made as needed once the plants are on site. In general, grasses and flowering perennials are installed as a smaller size in closer proximity to maximize coverage of a planting area.

Maintenance visits or coaching is highly encouraged for all of our installs. The first couple years, especially early in the season, are the most crucial for establishing your new plantings and you will see a dramatic drop in maintenance needs after that establishment period. Dense plantings are used to minimize open areas for weeds to grow.

Our preference is to design gardens that thrive on less water, using a mix of native plants and those acclimated to our dry climate. After establishment this could look like weekly irrigation for an average garden, or monthly irrigation for a xeric garden.

Maintenance

Followup visits are included in all planting projects to monitor plant health and answer any questions you may have about your new garden, watering needs and how to care for it. The number of follow-up visits will be determined based on the scope of the project and the individual clients’ needs.
